In particular for any Americans, Brits will not be happy if you say that they 'would be speaking German if it wasn't for you' or that 'we saved you back then'. It is a very firm opinion in Britain that the Brits had the biggest role. It is also a sore point as Americans make these points to the British people who lost millions of people to the war, compared to America who 'only' lost hundreds of thousands. Taking into account America's larger population, many view it as extremely offensive as they see America as the country who steeped in at the very end only because they were impacted and then took all the credit.Trust me on this, WW2 is a no man's land - especially for anyone crediting America. This is not taking anything from either side - I have seen it happen and it creates a hugely awkward situation and in rare occasions it can damage relationships. - FefeCat
